  • Josefa Vicenta Giambastini de Peláez, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba

    Josefa Vicenta Giambastiani de Peláez (1891-1974) was the first woman to obtain her doctorate at the School of Natural Sciences, today School of Geology of the Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of the National University of Córdoba in 1931. Her work was on the petrography, mineralogy and chemistry of the marbles of the El Sauce Quarries located in the Sierra Chica of Córdoba. She also discovered a rare twin in calcite (Traversella's Law). She was an exceptional teacher who excelled as a teacher and professor in several institutions in the cities of Rio Cuarto, San Francisco and Cordoba. Her passions were the Florentino Ameghino Museum and the Terminal Schools. She wrote numerous works oriented to primary and secondary education, especially Nociones de Mineralogía y Geología Argentinas, still today a work worth reading. She had a full and intense family life, having raised and given university studies to five children, together with her husband Dr. Víctor Peláez.
