Abstract

The presence of HCV RNA and genotype distribution among 310 samples from Central region of Argentina was detected by molecular techniques (RT-nested PCR and RFLP). HCV/HIV coinfection was 11,8% and genotype 1 was more prevalent (73%) in this group. Among HCV monoinfected individuals the prevalence of genotypes 1 and 2 were 49.4% and 43,9%, respectively.

Logistic regression analysis showed that age and intravenous drug use (IVDU) are independent determinants of genotype distribution. Genotype 2 had higher prevalence in people older than 50 years, but not association with routes of transmission could be found. The prevalence of genotype 1 was due to the use IVDU among young adults. The increasing prevalence of genotype 1, homogeneously distributed in all ages has important implications in therapeutic decisions, considering its low response to antiviral therapy.
