Abstract

This paper reviews some of the basics of epigenetics and its relationship with psyche, with a view to passing on these theoretical developments to Psychology degree courses. In this respect, epigenetics is defined as the study of stable and inheritable changes in the expression of genomes, without that representing an alteration to the nucleotide sequence. DNA methylation, the changes in the configuration of histones and silencing by non-coding RNA represent three of the main molecular mechanisms involved in the activation or suppression of genes. Likewise, a relevant role in the regulation of gene expression is also attributed to the environment. Adverse social-affective conditions in early stages of life favor epigenetic marks that predispose individuals to a stress response that is less regulated during later stages of life.
