Aeschynomene elegans Cham. & Schltdl. and A. brasiliana are cited for the first time for the flora of Paraguay. This work includes descriptions, identification key, illustrations and distribution of species in the region, including modern collections, especially from Bolivia, country where the genus was never studied.
Most type specimens of the species were studied and, for some species, leptotypes or neotypes were
designated.
