Background and aims: Zephyranthes bifida (Amaryllidaceae) was recently included as the only polymorphic species of the subgenus Neorhodophiala. Its taxonomic history has not been reviewed, and it is a valuable contribution to elucidate the putative species complex that suggests the considerable morphological variation observed in its wide range of distribution. The present study aims to present the taxonomic history of Z. bifida with the complete list of synonyms, together with some morphological observations.
M&M: Original publications, floras and digital databases were consulted. A table was prepared with the complete list of synonyms in which the scientific name, year and reference of the publication, type of taxonomic event and its synonyms were included. Within the framework of morphometric studies carried out with adult individuals from eight populations in the province of Buenos Aires, certain character measurements were found to be novel compared to the descriptions of Z. bifida.
Results and conclusions: Forty-nine taxonomic events were recorded. Based on our study, we propose to include two new synonyms for Z. bifida and recognize one name as illegitimate; thereby, it currently is associated to 43 legitimate synonyms, three illegitimate names, and two isonyms without nomenclatural status. Monitoring of cultivated specimens allowed us to observe that the same bulb can generate inflorescences with both spathe types, ruling out the hypothesis that this morphological variable could correspond to different taxa.
