Abstract

At the end of this brief portrait of the first Argentine naturalist, as well as a remarkable and self-sacrificing doctor-hygienist, I see one of my dearest aspirations fulfilled. We Argentines owe a great deal to the enterprising genius of this noble martyr who was Dr. Francisco Javier Muñiz, and I have therefore wanted to evoke some aspects of his exemplary life, since his figure acquired such extraordinary merits.

At the distance of the years, his outstanding performance may appear somewhat confused or diluted, so it is necessary to clearly agree on it so that there is no doubt about his venerable memory and be rightly admired by generations.

I have had the good fortune to have at my disposal for my researches the valuable archives in the possession of the illustrious naturalist's relatives, who have also provided me with numerous data that complement and clarify it. I must, therefore, honestly declare that my task would have been incomplete had it not been for this special circumstance.

Rodolfo Parodi was born on September 13, 1903 in the city of Necochea (province of Buenos Aires) and died on November 14, 2004 at the age of 101 in the city of San Salvador de Jujuy (province of Jujuy), thus concluding a family tradition in the subject of a couple of centuries of duration, studying mainly fossil mammals. Rodolfo Parodi was a professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Salta and served as director of the Museum of Natural Sciences of San Martin Park (Salta), helped to recreate the scientific and cultural activity of the early twentieth century in minute detail, largely due to his family life and tradition. His prolific work presents contributions of great importance mainly on geology, zoology and paleontology, science that, as we said, was oriented to the study of mammals, making contributions on mastodons of outstanding interest and of full validity. In 1993 the regional museum of Natural Sciences, named after Professor Rodolfo Parodi Bustos, was founded in the city of Salta. Even at his advanced age, he possessed an incomparable and admirable lucidity.
