Abstract

We first heard about the existence of an archaeological site on the shores of the Río Tercero lake at the beginning of 1938. A colleague, returning from a fishing trip, brought us some pottery samples collected in front of Villa Rumipal.

Alberto Rex González (Pergamino, Buenos Aires province, November 16, 1918 - La Plata, Buenos Aires province, March 28, 2012) was an Argentine archaeologist, anthropologist and physician who excelled in the study of the pre-Columbian cultures that developed in South America and, in particular, the current Argentine territory.

He was born and raised in Pergamino, province of Buenos Aires. It was in the stream of his hometown where he dug for the first time when he was still a child. He graduated in Medicine from the National University of Córdoba in 1945, but his interest in anthropology led him to specialize in that discipline. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology at Columbia University (U.S.A.) in 1948, began working at the Museum of La Plata that same year, and in 1953 began teaching at the National University of Rosario. In 1955 he defined the culture of La Aguada as a new archaeological entity of Northwest Argentina. In 1956 he moved to Córdoba where he became the Director of the Institute of Anthropology of the University of Córdoba. In 1962, he returned to work in La Plata, as a researcher for CONICET.
