La epidemiología es un instrumento fundamental para el ejercicio y la investigación en Salud Pública, hoy, también, ampliamente utilizado por otras disciplinas. Históricamente la epidemiología es, a un tiempo, reciente y antigua. Reciente es el uso del término epidemiología que, en España, aparece por primera vez en 1802, en la obra de Joaquín Villalba: Epidemiologia española; o Historia cronológica de las pestes, contagios, epidemias y epizootias: que han acaecido en España desde la venida de los cartagineses, hasta el año 1801.
