Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is hitting the world. The massive interconnectivity, airborne transmission, presymptomatic contagiousness and the absence of pharmacological treatments contributed to its wide distribution. Cases skyrocketed around the world. The tools available were the classic non-pharmacological interventions of epidemiology. Some countries used them effectively and managed to control the pandemic. The rest go through second or third waves of cases. The pandemic deepened previous inequalities in the world. Less than a year after the start of the pandemic, the arrival of vaccines raised new hopes. However, the shortage of doses and inequities in their distribution triggered controversies. The goal of herd immunity by vaccine is unattainable. Immunizing risk groups to reduce deaths only seems possible in a few countries. A critical reflection was carried out on the distribution of vaccines in the world.
