Abstract

The aim of this communication is to distinguish the constitutive components of cultural identity present the processes of appropriation of the lived space, urban imaginaries, and historical memory of the inhabitants of Isla Mujeres, in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The methodology employed in the study is qualitative and exploratory in scope. To achieve this, interviews were conducted with several inhabitants of the island, along with a participatory workshop through a digital platform. The main finding of the research reveals that cultural identity in Isla Mujeres is synthesized in the concept of ‘being an islander’. This idea is supported by the imagined social structure made up of family groups identified as founders, developers, and other islanders or non-islanders. The notion of ‘being an islander’ shows the contributions of these three family groups in the construction of urban imaginaries and preserving the historical memory of the Isla Mujeres community.
