DOMESTICITY, RESPONSIBILIZATION AND FORMS OF AGENCY. THE MEANING AND USES OF PRISON WORK IN THE PRISON OF WOMEN OF THE CITY OF SANTA FE, ARGENTINA
Main Article Content
Abstract
The present article describes and analyzes the uses of work at a women’s prison in Argentina from a gender perspective.
Our starting theoretical point was to consider the articulation between work and gender in prison as a governmental device, that functions in repressive and productive ways, but also as a potential resource for women in prison to develop some degree of agency in a context of strong deprivation and great power differentials. In this direction, the article focuses, first, on the way in which work conveys images about incarcerated women and their “correction”. Secondly, it analyzes the various uses that women make of work in prison. From it, shows how in both dimensions emerges a type of subjectivity that the prison institution tries to build using work characterized not only by demands of conformity to traditional models of femininity, but also by the attempt to build micro and proactive entrepreneurial subjectivities.
