Territorial and Population Transformations on the Atlantic Coast of Buenos Aires: The Districts of General Pueyrredon and Mar Chiquita in the First Decades of the 21st Century

Abstract

In the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina), on the coast of the Argentine Sea there are many towns whose population in 2010 was less than 20,000 inhabitants. The article focuses on the seaside area of General Pueyrredon and Mar Chiquita, that is in localities and neighborhoods located along provincial route No. 11. This is an extensive territory where towns and neighborhoods coexist with dispersed rural population areas and a variety of land uses. The aim is to analyze the demographic and housing dynamics in agglomerations on the General Pueyrredon and Mar Chiquita coastline between 2001 and 2020. The data sources are the Censos Nacionales de Población, Hogares y Viviendas 2001, 2010; the Precenso de Viviendas 2020 and World Pop data bases. Quantitative techniques of basic statistical analysis, calculating rates, variations and percentages of the data sets were applied. The results show that population growth rates are rapid and include structural changes in sex and age composition. On the other hand, housing occupancy level is increasingly higher, with changes in occupancy from second residences to permanent ones. There is also an increase in the construction of new housing units.
