MOURISCOS EM PORTUGAL. TRISTE HISTÓRIA, TRISTE HISTORIOGRAFIA

Abstract

Portuguese political and social historiography showed little interest
in the minorities of the Portuguese past in spite of the relevant presence
of African prisoners and Afrodescendants in the XV, XVI and XVII
centuries. This article comments on Isabel Braga´s book: “Mouriscos e
cristaos no Portugal quinhentista, duas culturas e duas concepçoes
religiosas em choque”, which depicts an important profile of the
Moorish population based on the documentation of the Inquisition.
The historical narrative of the author is also analyzed as a record of
the reason of the relative historiographic silence on the Portuguese-
Jewish, Portuguese-Islamic and Portuguese-African commnunities.
