The Oficialía Mayor of the Municipality of Córdoba is the repository of an important set of historical documents related to the function of justice during the 18th century. These are the Books of Jail Visits, written by the scribes of the Cabildo, in compliance with the colonial judicial officials.
The set is made up of five bound books, handwritten, from the period 1764-1810.
This documentation has a special value for researchers of local colonial history, since it not only complements the sources preserved in other documentary repositories, such as court records, but also allows the formulation of new questions about justice, crime and punishment, the malleability of law and institutions in relation to society or the multidimensional nature of disciplinary institutions.
