Abstract

This article will present the structure of the internal eight as the topological foundation of the concept of repetition as defined by Jacques Lacan. From the investigations concerning the structure in question, we will derive considerations that allow us to investigate both the status of Lacanian psychoanalysis as a clinical device and the logical development of certain conjectures of the French psychoanalyst. When working with concepts, we will think about repetition in conjunction with the two notable definitions that Lacan provided for his concept of the Real: the “impossible” and the “same”. Furthermore, we will discuss the relationship between repetition and the analytical act, the latter being considered a concept in dispute among some of the most prominent post-Lacanians. Supporting the topological foundation common to both of the concepts - the double turn of the signifier - we will propose that our study of repetition can shed light on the specificity of the act as a clinical maneuver in the treatment of neurosis.
