Resumo

O artigo refere-se aos diversos mecanismos que desencadeiam a resposta inflamatória e as consequências que costumam ocorrer quando a agente nocivo não é esclarecida com a perpetuação do processo; que está ligado à interligação entre os principais sistemas do corpo: imunológico, endócrino e o sistema nervoso autônomo. Em consonância com as pesquisas mais recentes, uma nova abordagem também é oferecida, onde a inflamação se torna uma resposta destinada a restaurar a homeostase. Existe um componente associado a desvios excessivos dos processos celulares, incapazes de ser controlados por mecanismos reguladores, que possui algumas, mas não todas as características da resposta clássica: para ou metaflamação. Por outro lado, a inflamação tradicional, que, embora possa estar relacionada com este fenómeno, está particularmente ligada à resposta a agentes patogénicos, toxinas ou outros agentes, não ajustáveis em si, mas igualmente ameaçadores.
