Abstract

In this paper, we present a qualitative research that analyzes images on electrostatic induction included in textbooks with the aim of
unraveling the co-deployment of verbal and visual languages to construct meanings. The analysis combines guidelines from Systemic-
Functional Linguistics and contributions from previous research in Science Didactics. The sample includes 16 images of 12 textbooks,
both secondary and university level, used in Argentina. We examine visual-verbal aspects (type of representation, focus of the image,
verbal components) and disciplinary aspects (charges, attractions and repulsions, mobility of electrons). The results allow us to identify
the physical phenomena represented, characterize the forms of representation and detect some difficulties that could potentially hinder
disciplinary learning. We conclude by stating that the images cannot be understood intuitively, but rather require a detailed interpretation
that delves into the meanings of both the visual and verbal representations.
