Abstract

The aim of this research was to analyze students’ explanations and possible obstacles on biological evolution under a historical review and concepts that make up that theory. History and the explanations of learning obstacles were considered for this approach. The survey was conducted with 46 high-school students. The answers to the statement: “Explain how the biological evolution occurs” fell into five categories: notions of biological evolution, teleological view, evolution as synonymous with progress, confusion over the term evolution, non-scientific view. By the analysis of the replies, the main obstacle to overcome is the teleological view presented by the students; the religious view, regarded in many articles as an obstacle, was not significant in this study.
