Abstract

The presence of Rhyssomatus sp. (Pilosipes? Heller, 1921) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a weevil producing serious damage to sweet potato cultivations, has been reported in Córdoba. The symptomatology produced in cultivation and the behavior in the field are described, and damage is quantified. Symptoms begin to occur in lots destined for the production of cuttings and immediately after transplanting of the crops. Damage is produced both by adults and by larvae. The former bore longitudinal galleries in tender sprouts and leaf petioles. Females oviposit at the base of stems. Larvae undermine the stems of cuttings and transplanted plants, causing weakening and death. Damage can exceed 40% of the plants.
