Disappearance of in situ dry matter of some tropical forage species at the regrowth stage.
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this work was to compare at the regrowth stage the in situ dry matter disappearance (in situ DMD) among some tropical forage grasses. The evaluated species were: Setaria anceps cv. Kazungula, Antephora pubescens, Cenchrus ciliaris cv. Molopo, Panicum coloratum var. Makarikariense, Chloris gayana Ecotipo Norte de Córdoba, Panicum maximum cv. Gatton, and Eragrostis curvula cv. Tanganyka. Samples of whole plants and two cutting heights (5 to 20 cm and 21 to 40 cm) were analyzed. Dry matter disappearance was measured by the in situ method, using two steers chronically fistulated in the rumen and incubating the samples during 96 hours. It was concluded that the tropical species studied at the regrowth stage showed significative differences of quality. Panicum maximum and Setaria anceps showed the highest in situ DMD, and Eragrostis curvula the lowest. The quality of the species did not vary with the different cutting heights, with the only exception of Cenchrus ciliaris.
