In situ nitrogen mineralization in a summer crop: effect of soil moisture and nitrogen form present.
Main Article Content
Abstract
The effect of the chemical form of inorganic nitrogen and soil moisture on nitrogen mineralization and immobilization were studied in an Entic Haplustoll in Córdoba, Argentina. Nitrate, ammonium, and soil moisture were studied at incubation intervals of 14 days throughout the growth cycle of a soybean crop. A negative relationship between the initial and the final inorganic N contents was found when soil water content was not a limiting factor. Mineralization and immobilization were closely related to the soil water energetic status: mineralization proceeded when the soil water matric potential ranged between -17 and -39 kPa, whereas at lower potential nitrogen immobilization prevailed.
