In France, the 2014 World Cup provoked a series of debates and reports that showed Brazil to be more complex and problematic than the French were accustomed to seeing. It is also true that Brazil's 7-1 loss to Germany in the semi-finals showed a Seleção completely opposed to its glory days. During the first week of June, before the opening ceremony, the experienced presenter of the French television programme "C dans l'air" confessed to being surprised to see a film by Cantona about the well-known Brazilian story of a 1920s Rio "colour" player who felt obliged to cover his face with rice powder in order not to leave the pitch. Few people remember that before the 1958 World Cup victory, being black or mestizo was considered a disability to join the Seleção.
