Abstract

Introduction: This article highlights the growing evidences showing the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) due to their impact on mental and physical health in childhood. Pioneering studies of ACEs and their relationship with chronic diseases are mentioned. Additionally, the epigenetic influence is explored and how mindfulness practices may mitigate its negative effects.

Objectives: to analyze the epigenetic effects in individuals who have been exposed to ACEs and explore the effects of mindfulness practice in individuals with a history of ACEs.

Conclusions: Evidences of epigenetic modifications are observed in participants exposed to ACEs, with lasting effects in their adulthood. Thus, stress in childhood is associated with a higher future risk of academic, health and behavioral disorders. Furthermore, the influence of adverse maternal experiences on the health of children is revealed. The practice of mindfulness is proposed as an effective and recommended intervention.
