Abstract

Ulrich Brand and Markus Wissen point out that from the colonization process of the 16th century, a model of productivity is imposed, which defines an “imperial way of life”, within the framework of capitalist hoarding of land and resources. This presentation analyzes different works that’s address the problem of desertification in the region of Guanacache (Cuyo, Argentina), a space that in the 16th and 19th centuries was an andean path between the cities of Mendoza, San Juan and San Luis. The advance of the desert, the drought and the famine on this once natural aquifer system where exiled indigenous communities survived, is the great articulating theme of Mercedes Araujo’s novel, The daughter of the goat (2021). Also, this text analyzes its formal construction and the way in which it is related to the fictions of Antonio Di Benedetto and Juan Draghi Lucero, and with the series “Vestigios Huarpes” of the painter Fidel Roig Matóns.

Author Biography

Jimena Néspolo, Universidad de Buenos Aires / Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas

Jimena Néspolo is a storyteller, poet, journalist and researcher at the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET). She holds a PhD in Literature from the University of Buenos Aires. Since 1999 she has edited the magazine Boca de Sapo. Arte, literatura y pensamiento (www.bocadesapo.com.ar). As a journalist, she has also collaborated in the newspapers Página/12 and Perfil (Argentina), in the magazines Letra urbana (Miami), Letras libres (Mexico), Quimera (Barcelona), The Brooklyn Rail (New York); and has written the book ¿Quién mató a Cafrune? Crónica de la muerte de la canción militante (Tinta Limón, 2018).
Her essay Ejercicios de pudor. Sujeto y escritura en la narrativa de Antonio Di Benedetto (Adriana Hidalgo, 2004) has been awarded the Premio Especial Presidencia de la Nación a la Excelencia Cultural en Letras and the Premio del Fondo Nacional de las Artes. She was the critical editor of the Cuentos completos by Antonio Di Benedetto and of the gothic stories by the Argentine writer Eduarda Mansilla. Her latest critical intervention, Imperio Kitsch. Ornament and culture at the turn of the millennium, was published in 2020 by the Latin American Studies Network - Katatay.
She has taught courses and seminars at the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina), the University of Granada (Spain) and the Ca'Foscari University of Venice (Italy), among other houses of study; since 2017 she coordinates the Research Symposia of the Institute of Hispano-American Literature of the University of Buenos Aires.
Her book of short stories Las cuatro patas del amor (2018) was awarded at the 59th edition of the Casa de las Américas Prize (Cuba).
